Grades
Your child's grades will be posted and updated on Powerschool throughout the year. Plainfield will be using a standards-based report card for grades K-2 in math, reading, language, writing, and behavior. Each subject area is divided into a list of skills that the students are responsible for learning. Students will receive a separate mark for each standard. These progress reports are designed to inform parents of student mastery at the end of each quarter instead of an average of graded student work. This is important at the primary level because students are developing literacy and numeracy skills. The "average of graded work" method punishes students who attempt to learn and fail at the beginning of the instructional cycle.
The report card will use three metrics to report a student's progress toward mastery of the standard.
*1. A student cannot complete the task independently and shows little understanding of the skill.
*2. A student shows some understanding of the skill; support and reinforcement is needed.
*3. A student consistently and independently applies the skill.
The purpose of this reporting system is to provide parents, teachers, and students with more accurate information regarding students' progress toward meeting content standards. Many times an A, B, or C does not give the most complete and accurate information on what skills a child has mastered in broad subjects such as math, reading or the writing process. Students will receive a traditional report card in third grade with letter grades and general subject areas.
